On January 10, 1993, the Open Score new music series presented the first concert of Jan Jarvlepp's works in the Salon of the Canadian Museum of Nature, Ottawa. Under the artistic direction of soprano Paula Quick, the program included the premieres of Life in the Fast Lane, Encounter and Underwater, which featured Quick as vocalist. This well-attended event, which followed the composer's 40th birthday, was recorded for broadcast by the CBC and was reviewed by the Ottawa Citizen.
From January, 1993 to the summer of 1999, Jan Jarvlepp was the music director of Espace Musique, Ottawa's new music concert presenter. During this period the concert season grew to eight concerts per season and many premieres were presented. The organization also moved its concert venue from the Museum of Nature's Salon to the more professional venue of the National Gallery Auditorium. He left in order to have adequate time to compose his two commissioned works, Concerto 2000 and Quintet 2000, during the summer of 1999 in order to have them ready for the year 2000.
